COLLECTIVE INSIGHT WITH PILBARA GODDESSES

One definition of "goddess" is: A greatly admired or adored woman.

These intelligent goddesses have teamed up to create a weekend of stillness, movement, creativity and nurturing to untangle the knots of the body and mind. A residential retreat to unite in  feminine wisdom and nurture soul's.

We've asked Cassandra Doyle, Kiah Twelftree, Jaclyn Nicholl and Beth Corps to give us some insight into what makes them tick and why they are so passionate about helping others reconnect with the environment and themselves.

1 :: For readers not familiar with you, can you give a little insight into your role?

Kiah Twelftree: I’m Kiah - doula and creative goddess doing some styling, facilitating creative workshops and part of the transformative theme behind the retreat.

Jackie Nicholl: Jackie Nicholl – owner/ operator of Cracker Jack Paddle Sports

Cas Doyle: I am Cass, a yogi and owner of The Space.

Beth Corps: Founder and Original Owner and Director of Soul cafe Karratha, I have now let that go to be a Mama Goddess to 4 children under 3.5 years.  Since leaving Soul, I have been extensively studying and researching nutrition and how food is used to heal the body and fuel the mind.  This fascinates and excites me to no end.

2 :: You all have your own strengths and specialty areas. What inspired you to get together and create this gorgeous event?

Kiah: This is something that Cas dreamed up, and the collaboration formed organically. Really it is Cas who has formed the team that we are. The more that we plan for the retreat, the more excited I get, the more ideas come and I know this is just the start of something big :)

Jackie: All our businesses support local women in their journey to better health and wellbeing and it was the women of our region inspired us to create a retreat that was affordable and using our local collaboration. We already have what most retreats look for; exotic location, space, wilderness. Combined that with goddess team and you have a truly special retreat!

Cas: The concept was born out of a time of grief.  When I looked deep inside myself and tried to understand what it was that I needed to heal it became quite clear to me that in order to find balance and restore my mental health I needed to start being compassionate with myself again, and I needed to really learn to love who I was, without any exceptions.  In order for this to occur I realised that I needed my yoga practice more than ever, but I also needed to re-establish my self-care practices (which had slipped away) I needed to be creative and I needed lots of outdoor fun and adventure.  It just so happened that I have these amazing women in my life who could not only support me in that, but who could also come together so we can support other women to heal and change their view about themselves.

Beth: I believe Cas is the original Creative Brain Founder behind the Goddess Retreat.  I had been connecting with Cas and was getting little updates on the process of the retreat and hearing how it was unfolding.  I was super excited to hear it all and was always going to attend, then one night over dinner when Fervor came to town, Cas mentioned they were stuck on a caterer for the event.  The next day I contacted Cas and threw the idea at her that I could help… the rest has evolved very organically… just as she had intended and predicted.

3 :: What do you hope your goddesses take away from the retreat?

Kiah: Practising mindfulness, connection with their self, love and acceptance of themselves, a connection with their surroundings and nature, and a sense of passion for life and expression (creativity)

Jackie: I think every goddess on the retreat will take something different to enhance their life after. I personally hope they take away the confidence to get themselves outside and connecting with nature. To know how to tap into the ever-full cup of the beauty of our earth and use it to find peace and reflection.

Cas: To feel comfortable with thinking of themselves as a goddess.  To have tools to stay connected with their needs and desires.

Beth: Oh My GOSH!! I KNOW they will take away and be filled with so much internal Love and strength for self and for the amazing women who they will be surrounded by.  They will learn to nurture themselves, to be kind to themselves and to be filled with peace, harmony, creative inspiration, appreciation for nature and nourishment.

4 :: Where do you retreat to when you need some space and clarity in your own life?

Kiah: I seek colour therapy - so I go somewhere with a view. The Pilbara has so much colour to offer. I’ll walk amongst the wildflowers, head to the beach at high tide, or make time to watch the sunset (I’ll be looking at what the clouds are doing, to see if they might enhance the sun set perfectly and if I think it is going to be unreal I’ll get up on the roof and watch it)

Jackie: For me I need to get outside, emerged in nature. Surfing is my happy place, the movement of the waves and being so in tune with the rhythm of the earth.

Cas: Either my yoga mat or into salt water.

Beth: I love to be visually inspired by the wonder of nature or be internally harmonised by the sound of music. I love to drive with the music up loud, watch sunsets on the beach or simply listen to nothing and focus on breath in the serenity of my own home.

5 :: What is your favourite thing about women?

Jackie: Their ability to learn and grow. When I used to take university students on kayak expeditions this was really evident. The boys would muscle through the technical skill and never progress with their technique, the ladies would listen, practice and try to improve their skills every day. They would be rewarded in saving energy and high marks in Technical skill.

Cas: Women have an amazing ability to band together and support another woman in need.  I have been apart of support system both on the giving and receiving end. Women also have this amazing ability to look at someone they love and see their pain without needing to speak a word.

Beth: Their amazing ability to achieve so much and multi task so effortlessly. Paired with the maternal, nurturing instinct we carry and share with our children and each other.

6 :: Why did you choose Cossack as the venue for the retreat?

Cossack is this beautiful, characteristic and historical place that makes us feel calm, centred and alive all at the same time.  It also fitted our needs perfectly in that it is isolated from everyday life and connects us to the ocean and nature.

7 :: What is your favourite, to-live-by quote?

Kiah: This kind of changes every now and then. At the moment, it is
“Practise Love until you remember that you are love.”  (Swami sai premananda)

Jackie: “Never underestimate the power of positive praise” from an old sailing dog in Mexico. I live by this with my teachings and it’s power can achieve great things in individuals and groups

Cas: This can change from month to month, but for today my favourite is….“The mind is everything, what you think, you become.”

Beth: If it can be imagined, it is possible

COLLECTIVE INSIGHT WITH MOVE YOUR BODY

Move Your Body is passionate about educating and inspiring women to move their body and lead an active lifestyle for themselves and their family.

They strongly believe that a healthy body comes in many different shapes and sizes, which is why they are dedicated to providing a large range of activewear to suit every body, no matter where you are at on your fitness journey or what stage of life you may be in.

This month Move Your Body is holding an awesome event to inspire and educate women on their fitness journey. Keep reading below to learn more about this exciting event and to purchase your ticket before they run out.

YOU’RE A BUSINESS SAVVY LADY ABOUT TO HOST YOUR FIRST EVENT, BUT FIRST TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR CAREER.

Hello! I’m Carol – Wife to Nick and Mum to Kooper and Lincoln. I am a qualified Personal Trainer, and the Founder of Move Your Body! I’m also a very enthusiastic netball player and beach lover.

I am a total fitness fanatic, I love everything about the health and fitness lifestyle from the movement side to good nutrition and even recovery. I love to spend time in the gym although I have to admit my workouts lately are a little less weights and a lot more of chasing children.

My career highlight I would have to say is where I am right now, I’m pretty proud of the direction the business has taken and how many lives we have been able to impact. My aspirations are for this to continue to grow and hopefully make a difference in the way women think about themselves and their body. For them to realise that healthy isn’t defined by a size.

There are a couple issues that I’m very passionate about – Autism, as this something very close to our heart and very prominent in our day to day lives. And also how important it is to live a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, and how to implement those changes into your everyday routine.

WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS – MOVE YOUR BODY?

Women’s Health and Fitness has always been a passion of mine. When I was 15 I did work experience in one of the gyms in Perth and I noticed that it was very male dominated. Back then it was a bit of a theme that the gyms were for the guys that liked to lift a lot of weights and a lot of women felt uncomfortable going to the gym or being there at the same time as them.

My goal has always been to change this, to give women a place where they could feel comfortable working out to achieve their goals but as well as overcome their insecurities.  And then my mum studied to become a Personal Trainer and we spoke about what we would like to do ‘one day’ and the idea started to become a bit more real. We wanted to create an environment where all women – no matter their shape, size or fitness level could attend and receive the encouragement and knowledge they needed to improve their health. The way the business started though was an accident. We started running bootcamps on the weekend for the ladies down at the footy club – which then quickly took off and before we knew we were running classes almost every day of the week.

A relocation to Karratha made running the business a bit more challenging but we were then able to expand into a different market, activewear to suit every shape, every size and every body, motivating women further to live an active lifestyle.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE TO YOU?

In our house its definatley a life of organised chaos, so everything is generally well planned out the day before. My Children and I are early risers so our days are usually in full force before most people are even awake. I like to spend the first bit of the mornings packaging up orders from overnight, answering emails, and going over my to do list for the day.

My children have quite a few appointments throughout the week so our days are usually spent bouncing between them, the park and home. On the Weekends you will be generally find me at the Local markets with a ‘Pop Up’ shop or enjoying downtime with my family.

I like to do majority of my behind the scene business work at night time once the kids are in bed but like most who run a business from home, I always find myself saying throughout the day ‘I’ll just send a quick email’ or ‘I’m just going to quickly do this’ . Luckily my children are pretty on to this now and as soon as I’ve disappeared into the study they are quick to pull me back out.

Between my children’s appointments, running a business, wifely duties, mum duties, workouts, netball etc. it does becomes a bit of a juggling act. But well worth it!

WORKING IN YOUR OWN BUSINESS IS NEVER AS EASY AS PEOPLE FIRST THINK – WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

The hardest part for me, was being patient.

When you first start your own business it generally takes a while for your business to take off and to build a name for yourself which can sometimes make you feel like you’re just not getting anywhere.

I regularly refer back to my business plan and make a list of short term goals that are going to help me achieve our long term goal. Persist and try to remember that nothing happens overnight.

SO WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART?

The most rewarding part for me is the connections I’ve been able to make with our clients and our customers. To be a part of someone’s health and fitness journey, big or small, is special. I love to hear about their achievements and how far they’ve come, and if I can help in any way at all, even in the form of motivating them with beautiful activewear, I feel pretty lucky.

We have a lot happening at Move Your Body at the moment, it is exciting times. Look out for some new brands, new products and new sizes! You may even find us “popping up” in a new location!

IT TAKES A LOT OF GUTS TO LAUNCH YOUR OWN BUSINESS, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING ENTREPRENEURS?

My advice to anyone that is starting their own business, especially in the health and fitness industry is to find your ‘Why’ . What is it that sets you apart from the rest and what motivates you to do what you do.

My business course mentor said to me once, don’t go too big too soon. And make sure you stick to your business plan. This is something I have had to remind myself constantly.

But most of all, keep going! There will be times that it will seem all too hard, you will be exhausted and feel like you can’t possibly put anymore of yourself into the business, my advice is to remember why you started, shake yourself off and start again tomorrow.

YOU’RE HOSTING A VERY EXCITING EVENT SOON, THE MOVE YOUR BODY WELLNESS DAY. WITH SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS, FITNESS CLASSES AND COOKING DEMONSTRATIONS – IT SOUNDS LIKE AN ACTION PACKED DAY! WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THIS WELLNESS DAY?

It defiantly is going to be an action packed day.

The Wellness day is for anyone that is lacking self-confidence, self-love or maybe just needs some guidance. With so many inspiring health professionals and valuable information to take away with them, it will be a day you won’t want to miss.

COLLECTIVE INSIGHT WITH ZEST E-BIZ

From Engineer to Business Coach, Kylah Morrison from Zest e-Biz has walked a different career path. She is passionate about empowering business excellence, but understands the importance of mindfulness in business. Kylah sat down with Karratha Collective to chat about her diverse career, Wiggle's dance parties and the awesome one day retreat she created to help you discover new tools to use every day to give you clarity on your direction in 2016.

Tell us a little about yourself and your career...

After completing a Master of Engineering Management at Canterbury Uni in NZ, I started my career working on offshore drilling rigs.

I meet my man in Perth and followed him to sunny Karratha, even though I vowed I’d never live in a small town again after growing up in a population of 20,000 people.

Now a mumma to two cheeky boys; one of which we travelled around South America with for 6mths when he was a baby. I’m also the founding president of the Karratha Toastmasters club and a board member for our local Chamber of Commerce, the KDCCI.

Passionate about business excellence and empowering peak performance, I help CEOs, entrepreneurial thinkers and community leaders get clarity and direction so they have more time and money to invest in kicking winning goals.

Don’t get me started on employee and customer engagement, and the need for more creativity and fun in business or you’ll never hear the end of it!

You’ll often find me practising yoga on Saturday mornings, enjoying a cuppa with good friends or hanging out with my wee family.

What prompted you to start your own business - Zest e-Biz?

As an engineer working in the resource industry, I felt trapped in a rat race I simply wasn’t passionate about.

Obsessed with reading professional development and business strategy books, yet unable to apply many of the concepts I read to my day job, I started a blog. In Sept 2011 I finally made the decision to back myself and launch Zest e-Biz part time.

I didn’t have the balls to quit there and then. Instead I eased myself out of the corporate world by going on maternity leave and then resigning late 2012.

After that we went travelling for six months in South America with our first son when he was just seven months old. And on our return at the end of 2013, I started focusing more seriously on growing Zest e-Biz.

What does a typical day look like for you?

With two little ones, I’ve found I’m a much happier mum and business owner when I don’t check my phone or email before 9am. Instead I try to focus on our morning routine eating breakfast together, getting housework out of the way early and planning our day.

I’m not perfect though. I often find myself glued to the computer in between building lego towers, baking muffins, or dancing to the Wiggles.

Thursdays and alternate Tuesdays are my ‘dedicated work days’ (if such a thing exists when you’re a mum). The boys both go to daycare on a Thursday, and the eldest on a Tuesday also.

Every alternate Tuesday arvo I chat on ABC radio about business on the WA Drive show. Leading up to that I’m usually gathering info and talking to local business owners, or clients, to ensure I’m covering the most current issues on air.

On Thursdays I usually have a couple of meetings one-on-one with coaching clients, unless I have a speaking gig, which often takes up a whole day. When I’m not ‘working’, I’m either hustling for more work, updating my website, blog or social media accounts or looking after the back end of business.

Being a big picture thinker, I tend to spend a bit more time on developing ideas rather than the completion side of things. But I keep telling myself it will all pay off in the long run! ;) After all, “you mustn’t be afraid to dream a little bigger darling”.

What is your most successful form of marketing?

Word of mouth is by far the most successful form of marketing for me. Joining our local Chamber of Commerce (KDCCI), founding the Karratha Toastmasters club and speaking on radio all significantly built my reputation and credibility around town as a business coach.

If you could go back to the very start of your small business journey, what advice would you give yourself?

Back yourself and just do it. You’ll never get things ‘right’ before you start. So just start, get some runs on the board and then refine and pivot your business direction from there.

Get used to working tired. Murphy’s Law that whenever you have a big gig on, the kids will have a terrible night. That just what being in business with small children is all about.

Get out there and don’t be afraid to create long term connections through ‘networking’. Dedicate your energy to working out how you can best serve others and you’ll never have to do the hard sell.

Finally, do more of what gives you energy and lights your fire!

You've recently collaborated with Amanda Ewin from the Lilac Lounge to create a retreat, unique to the Pilbara, 'Manifesting Wellness & Direction'. What can people expect from this retreat?
